The Superior Craton is a stable crustal block covering Quebec, Ontario, and southeast Manitoba in Canada, and northern Minnesota in the United States. It is the biggest craton among those formed during the Archean period. A craton is a large part of the Earth's crust that has been stable and subjected to very little geological changes over a long time. The size of Superior Craton is about 1,, km2. . For US orders, Brilliant Earth currently only collects sales tax on orders shipped to addresses in California State. For orders shipped to Canada, the UK, or Australia, Brilliant Earth collects the relevant GST/PST/HST/VAT based on the country/province that the order is being shipped to.

Abstract. Many eclogite xenoliths from kimberlites show geochemical and isotopic signatures compatible with an origin by subduction of oceanic crustal rocks, and it has been proposed earlier that progressively metamorphosed coesite- and diamond-bearing eclogitic assemblages and coesite inclusions in E-type diamonds may be viewed as an expression of Archean and Proterozoic Cited by: 5. Ga, greenschist facies volcaniclastic rocks and lamprophyre dikes in the Wawa area (Superior Craton) host the only diamonds emplaced in the Archean available for study today. Nitrogen aggregation in Wawa diamonds ranges from Type IaA to IaB, suggesting mantle residence times of tens to hundreds of millions of years. The carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) Cited by:

The distribution of lamprophyre-hosted Neoarchean diamond deposits in the southern Superior Province, Canada, corresponds to that of coeval giant (> t Au) examples of “orogenic” gold deposits, which are typically associated with quartz-carbonate veining. In Quebec, the 3 kimberlite fields of the Superior Province (Temiscamingue, Desmaraisville and Otish) are located south of the 52 nd parallel.

This portion of the Superior represents only 25% of. Stornoway Diamond Corp., Vancouver, BC Introduction The Superior Province in Eastern Canada is one of the world’s largest Archean cratons. The Renard kimberlites are located within its eastern portion, in the northern Otish Mountains of Quebec.

These rocks were emplaced within Neo-to-Mesoarchean ( to Ga) crystalline rock of the Wawa Subprovince, located within the Superior Province of North America. The emplacement age of the dyke is dated at ± Ma (1σ) (U-Pb in perovskite). derived from diamond-forming regions in the mantle), which were found in till samples from the northern Superior province and from areas underlain by Mesozoic bedrock in the south.

KIM sampling programs are ongoing in several parts of the province to expand and improve the data coverage. Northern Québec boasts excellent potential for the discovery of diamond deposits. The Québec portion of the Superior Province craton has a number of characteristics in common with cratons containing diamond-bearing kimberlites.

Sincemineral exploration activities have increased, notably in the following regions: Monts Otish; Monts Torngat. Sampling of surficial sediments in parts of Manitoba has revealed a wide range of kimberlite-indicator mineral (KIM) suites, with promising results in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, southwest Manitoba, the northern Superior province, and at Southern Indian Lake in the Trans-Hudson orogen.

Kopylova et al., ). The diamond occurrences are now recognized across the southern margin of the Superior Province after mineral exploration identified occurrences in the central and eastern Wawa subprovince and the westernmost Abitibi subprovince (Stott et al., ) and a concerted effort by the Ontario Geological Survey to assess diamond.

A continually renewed approach. Indetailed work at a scale of 1/50 was carried out in the Chibougamau sector (Figure 7), giving a more precise view of the t pe of contact between the southern edge of the Superior Province and the Grenville Province, an ancient, highly eroded mountain range that brings to the surface rocks formed deep in the earth’s crust.

We studied diamonds from a – Ga Wawa metaconglomerate (Southern Superior craton) and identified mineral inclusions of high-Cr, low-Ca pyrope garnet, low-Ti Mg-chromite, olivine (Fo93), and orthopyroxene (En94).

The diamonds have δ13C of − to − ‰ and derive from the spinel-garnet and garnet facia of harzburgite. [55] Kimberlites can be found in narrow (1 to 4 meters) dikes and sills, and in pipes with diameters that range from about 75 m to km. Fresh rock is dark bluish green to greenish gray, but after exposure rapidly turns brown and Category: Native minerals. This volume and the accompanying map series present a synthesis of our knowledge and interpretation of the geology of the Province of Ontario.

The document highlights briefly the role of geology in everyday life in the province and the evolving role of the Ontario Geological Survey; presents a summary sketch of the physiographic regions; gives a detailed overview of each of Superior, Southern.
