I loved this book! Stanley Spencer is an artist, who has been commissioned to paint murals on the walls of Sandham Memorial chapel, in Burghclere, Hampshire. Told through the eyes of Elsie Munday, the long suffering maid, cook, nanny and general go- getter, this is the story of Stanley, Hilda, his first wife and Patricia, wife number two.   An essential introduction to one of the most extraordinary and best loved British artists of the 20th century.

Stanley and Elsie by Nicola Upson #Review @Duckbooks @nicolaupsonbook Today's featured book is a work of literary fiction which centres on real people and events during the life of painter, Sir Stanley Spencer. Born in , Stanley Spencer quickly became a celebrated British artist. As Upson’s book (which by the way doesn’t contain dates) begins, he is in his mid thirties and deeply involved in what was to become one of his most famous projects.
